Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Honda HR-V are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The GMC Terrain doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Honda HR-V has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Terrain doesn’t offer knee airbags.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Honda HR-V achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The GMC Terrain has not been tested.

The HR-V’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Terrain doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the HR-V and the Terrain have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The Honda HR-V has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2026 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test. The Terrain has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2026.

Warranty

The HR-V’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Terrain’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the HR-V’s reliability 42 points higher than the Terrain.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Honda vehicles are better in initial quality than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda above average in initial quality. With 20 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda fourth in overall reliability. GMC is ranked 23rd.

Tires and Wheels

The HR-V LX’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Terrain’s standard 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The HR-V has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the HR-V flat and controlled during cornering. The Terrain’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The HR-V EX-L AWD handles at .82 G’s, while the Terrain AT4 pulls only .77 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The HR-V EX-L AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Terrain AT4 (28.1 seconds @ .57 average G’s vs. 28.6 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the HR-V’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the Terrain’s (35.1 feet vs. 37.1 feet).

For greater off-road capability the HR-V LX/EX-L has a 1.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Terrain (7 vs. 5.8 inches), allowing the HR-V to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The HR-V Sport’s minimum ground clearance is .9 inch higher than on the Terrain AT4 (7.3 vs. 6.4 inches).

Chassis

The Honda HR-V may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 400 pounds less than the GMC Terrain.

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the HR-V easier. The HR-V’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 28.6 inches, while the Terrain’s liftover is 29.9 inches.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Honda service is better than GMC. J.D. Power ranks Honda 7th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With an 8% lower rating, GMC is ranked 15th.

Ergonomics

The HR-V Sport/EX-L’s front power windows both open or close with one touch of the switches. The Terrain’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Honda HR-V has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Terrain.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Honda HR-V, based on reliability, safety and performance. The GMC Terrain isn't recommended.

The Honda HR-V outsold the GMC Terrain by almost two to one during 2025.
